Purple Allamanda Flower

Allamanda

Allamanda is a member of the dogbane (Apocynaceae) family and includes 12 species of evergreen shrubs that includes both semi-climbing and upright types that came from tropical America. These luxuriant and exotic plants are the epitome of a tropical shrub. The leaves are large, glossy, deep green and the flowers are usually deep golden yellow or purple. The flowers have trumpet-shaped feature, a widely flared throat of 5 large overlapping petals that appear mainly in summer and autumn. These plants are very popular for ornamental use grown in conditions similar to their native climate, but can be also grown in sheltered areas or conservatories in cooler climates. This genus is named after eighteenth-century Swiss botanist—Frederic Allamand.

Top Tip

Wear gloves when
taking cuttings of
Allamanda species,
or when pruning.
A milky sap exudes
when they are cut,
which can sometimes
cause itchy
skin irritations.

Cultivation

Allamandas are suited to a moist subtropical to tropical climate, that’s why they are tender to frosts. In order to promote a prolific flower display over a long flowering season allamandas require a combination of rich well-drained soil and plenty of summer moisture. They propagate from half-hardened cuttings. The evergreen shrubs and scrambling climbers in this genus root readily from greenwood nodal stem cuttings. Take 2-3in (5 - 8 c m) cuttings and root in humidity with bottom heat of 59°F (15°C). Cuttings should root in 6 – 8 weeks and flower in 2 - 3 years. Alternatively, for instant new plants, divide clumps of mature specimens, cut back hard, and replant.
