Lobelia

Lobelia is a very diverse and widespread member of the bellflower (Campanulaceae) family that consist of about 350 species annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Lobelia is very well known by its small mounding bedding annuals, with their masses of blue, purple, or white flowers lobelia has a large range of upright clump-forming plants that have a basal clump of simple leaves and showy terminal flower spikes, unlike the annual lobelias, the perennials have a wide color range and  can be of different colors. Lobelia flowers have 5 lobes, the lower 3 of which are enlarged to create a lip. The dark-flowered forms of lobelia usually have dark-red or purple foliage. Lobelia was first found in America and was widely used in herbal medicine by native Americans, and now it is used as homeopathic remedies.

Cultivation

Most of lobelias require sunny places. Annuals prefer a light free-draining soil, and hardy North American perennials can easily grow in fairly heavy soil. Tall types usually need stacking. The perennials propagate from basal cuttings or by division, and annuals propagate from seeds.
